Dental Cleaning
Professional cleanings every six months — the single most effective thing you can do to prevent cavities and gum disease.
What a Cleaning Is
More than a polish — a genuine reset for your oral health.
A dental cleaning is a professional cleaning performed by your dental hygienist, typically completed in less than 30 minutes. It's the most reliable way to remove plaque and tartar that brushing and flossing at home simply can't reach. Left untreated, that buildup leads to unhealthy gums and tooth decay — the kind of problems that require more involved treatment down the road.
A routine cleaning includes three steps: scaling, root planing, and polishing. Scaling removes plaque and tartar from all tooth surfaces. Root planing smooths the root surfaces to make it harder for bacteria to take hold. Polishing finishes the appointment by making tooth surfaces smooth, bright, and more resistant to future buildup.
We recommend cleanings every six months for most patients. Some people — those with a history of gum disease or heavier buildup — benefit from more frequent visits. We'll tell you honestly where you stand and what interval makes sense for you.
A professional cleaning reaches the plaque and tartar that home care alone can't remove.
Regular cleanings keep small problems from becoming bigger ones.

The Process
What to Expect at Your Cleaning Appointment
From exam to polished result, here's how a routine cleaning visit typically works.
Examination
We start with a comprehensive exam — checking for cavities, gum health, and anything else that needs attention. This is how we catch small concerns before they become bigger problems.
Scaling & Root Planing
Your hygienist removes plaque and tartar from all tooth surfaces — including below the gumline where bacteria accumulate. The method varies depending on the amount of buildup present.
Polishing
Polishing completes the cleaning by smoothing the surface of your teeth. Smooth surfaces are harder for plaque to cling to, which helps keep your teeth cleaner between visits.

“From the time you walk in, till the time you leave (and even after) you really get the feeling that this dentist office thinks of you as a friend/family member and not just a ‘patient.’ The aftercare with a text the next day to check up on you gives a personal touch that really means a lot. Dr. Will and his staff are the best in T-Town!”
