Fluoride Treatment

A fast, effective step that strengthens enamel and stops early decay — right at your regular visit.

What Fluoride Treatment Is

A few minutes at your cleaning — with protection that lasts long after.

Fluoride is a natural mineral that helps reinforce tooth enamel and reverse the very earliest stages of decay before they develop into cavities. During a fluoride treatment, we apply a concentrated fluoride varnish directly to your teeth — it takes just a few minutes at the end of your cleaning appointment. The fluoride absorbs into the enamel and continues working after you leave.

Tooth decay starts when acid-producing bacteria in plaque attack the enamel surface. Fluoride interrupts that process: it helps the enamel repair itself, makes it harder for bacteria to adhere, and can halt early-stage damage before a cavity forms. Professional-strength fluoride is significantly more concentrated than what's in toothpaste, which is why in-office treatment offers protection that home care alone can't match.

Most patients benefit from fluoride treatment — it's particularly important for anyone with active orthodontic treatment, exposed root surfaces, a history of frequent cavities, dry mouth, or a diet high in sugars or acids. We'll let you know whether it makes sense for you at each visit.

The Process

What to Expect at Your Fluoride Treatment Appointment

Fluoride treatment is one of the most straightforward things we do. Here's how it fits into your visit.

1

Cleaning & Evaluation

We start with your exam and cleaning, checking for early signs of decay and assessing your individual risk factors. We'll let you know whether fluoride treatment makes sense for you at this visit — and why.

2

Fluoride Application

We apply a professional-strength fluoride varnish directly to the surfaces of your teeth. The treatment takes just a few minutes and is completely comfortable — most patients barely notice it.

3

Instructions & Next Steps

We'll ask you to wait 30 minutes before eating or drinking so the fluoride can absorb fully. For patients with higher decay risk, we may recommend more frequent treatments between regular visits.

What Patients Say

5-Star Google Review
★★★★★
“I have always loved this place. They were so generous to provide me with an ASL interpreter, especially during the holiday season, which can be such a busy time for the team. Also, their toothbrushes are truly one of a kind — you cannot find them anywhere else! I forever recommend Vandervoort Family Dentistry, hands down.”
